What started as an idea in October 2007 as a means to search out an innovative way to attract some new artists to Unico Comics, Collections has turned into something to be very proud of. To be honest I didn’t know how hard or easy this project was going to be to manage. The pitch was easy cause at the end of the day it was a solid idea, even getting the extra artists worked out easier than I hoped for, all it took was for me to stick an add up on the Amateur Comics Guild website and for Steven to knock up a few posters we both stuck around Newcastle. I’d wanted from the start to attract just amateur status artists because like us everyone needs the opportunity to begin somewhere. As the artists submitted their stuff we separated the men from the boys and began the next stage… the scripts.
This included all the writers that currently working with Unico to write any script they want as long as it was between 6 and 16 pages in length. Each of us did between 4 and 6 scripts which were stripped of our names and sent off to the artist to pick their own favourite to draw. On December 1st the work truly began and off the artists went with their crayons and felt tips to do their stuff. At this point my job was simple, all I had to do was get monthly updates from them and deal with any problems that came along… of which there was none… no really I was surprised by this to.
The deadline was July 2008 and 90% of all the work arrived on time and I was very happy with the results. The 9 mini comics all came back and looked amazing with each being a hugely different style from the rest. The other bits and pieces of the graphic novel like interiors and covers where given to people who were doing this kind of work for the first time, it kinda kept in spirit to giving everyone a chance. As we speak it’s not long till the stuff goes of to the printers and in about 6 weeks we’ll have the first proof copies in our hands… I for one can’t wait.
