Well I’m full steam ahead with my new book based on the sport of Airsoft. I thought I’d post up the prologue, bare in mind it’s an early draft. Oh and i've changed the books name.
Prologue
I watched as the kid crabbed his neck, the .5 BB struck him right just above where I had intended. I was trying the get a body shot but the wind had caught the round and lifted it higher, no matter as it still counted, besides I could claim it was intended as a neck shot. I watched the lad lift his hand and shout his hit. I could see the poor sods face as he sulked off back to his base. I had been on watch now for an hour at that point and in that time I’d managed to get four confirmed kills and one cheating git who pulled back but didn’t shout his hit. Behind me the ground crunched as Garza moved in keeping himself low and hiding behind the bush I was lying in.
‘Was that another one Wedge mate’?
‘Aye pal, fifth one in the last forty minutes’
Garza checked his watch and gave me a pat on the back.
‘Okay Wedge give it five more minutes and I’ll send Smudge up to take your place. Get some chow down your next and a bit kip. I can’t image Alpha moving on us once it goes dark’.
I agreed with this assessment. If anything the five I had seen were most probably scouts sent be Alpha to locate our FOB. Since I was so well hidden they couldn’t tell which direction they had been hit and in turn the FOB’s probable location. After five minutes I could hear Smudge ninja up behind me and climb into my position. He had swapped out into his GBB Kar98 Sniper rifle. A truly lovely bit of kit compared to my trusty springer L96 even though we could hit the same distance. Within no time I was back onto the main dirt track and heading towards our digs. I tipped Jensen a nod on gate duty as I passed in.
We were coming to an end of day two in our three day Airsoft competition and this was our home for the night. Bravo’s FOB was nothing more than built up walls of tyres and ploughed earth, our tents were laid out and the Marshal’s had put up a few operation tents for the IC’s to spank themselves silly in with the host of intel maps and plans. A voice broke my concentration.
‘Evening Herr Wedge’
I turned to see Hans shooting me a smile. He was sat with the rest of his buddies, all of them German and dressed in WW2 American gear. His lot were an airsoft team from just outside Berlin called Eagle Troop and we’re in the overall Bravo group along side us Mercs.
‘Alreet big lad, how’s it hanging?’
‘Good, Good. I see you Mercs are almost done with Guard duty yes?’
‘Aye mate, Garza has sent Smudge up for the last hour then the French mob is watching our immediate boundaries.’
After shooting the sh*t with Hans I made my way through the maze of tents to the canteen tent. The smell of the BBQ had been driving me wild for an hour now and I was bloody starving. After collecting what I could only assume was a hotdog nuked from orbit I sat down in front of my tent. Not even a mouthful in and I was already being harassed by Cyprus.
‘Evening fool’
‘Hi Matey, what’s up?’ I mumbled back with a mouth full of food.
‘Garza is what’s up pal, he’s asked for you in the IC tent. Seems him and the other commanders are looking for a bit of Bad Company and you’re the new Sweetwater’.
After I had devoured the dog I was stood in the IC tent with four other guys including Hans. In front of me was Garza and Jayne the companies 2i/c’s and Reynolds, Bravo’s Commander.
‘Hello Guys’ began Reynolds, he’s warm grin backed up with body language showing he was ex British Military and knew how to lead men.
Come first light tomorrow I’ll be wanting to send out the main force to the main Target of La Rochelle. We intend to get Bravo in there early doors and hopefully stop Alpha doing the same. We can only do that by knowing their location and in turn working out the best route. That’s where you boys come in. The five of you and one Marshall will be moving out in a few hours and your mission is to locate the enemy FOB’.
He’s mad I thought to myself, moving through thick forest at night was dangerous to say the least. The chances of tripping over something and snapping an ankle were high and to be fair I just wanted to kip down and have some downtime with the lads.
‘Now I know you’ll not be happy to be out there in the dark, so you’ll be using these’
Out of a large hold all he produced five sets of night vision goggles. F*ck the lads this just got interesting. A night OP with NVG’s? Yes bloody please.
