This week… I feel the community

Since I co-started Unico Comics back in 2005 I’ve kept an eye on the Small Press community to see how they do their thing and how the whole processing comes together. I’ve waiting this long to start press releases and the such like and make our presents known for one simple reason… why bother until we have a comic to sell.

Well this year we have three. Two are being project managed by myself (‘Unico Collections’ and later this year ‘The legend known as…’). You may remember that one of my first posts on here was me talking about the pressure of making sure this thing comes out the best for everyone and the comics are sold and presented in the best possible way for the company as a whole. I mean after all both artist and writer put 100% of their time and effort into making the comic it just seems insulting to put anything less into promoting it.

Anyway back to the pressure thing and I have to say it wasn’t to bad as I thought it might be. This is down to forward planning on my part and the back up of fellow staff who are committed to the cause. I have a few people to gives special thank for their help. Dan (Covers), Steven(re-sizing), and Phil (Interiors) all went beyond the normal jobs they do as artists or writers to ensure ‘Unico Collections’ was sent off to the printers an amazing bit of work. For that I thank you for your blood sweat and tears on this project.

Now the fun part starts and hopefully after all those years of finding the best Small Press websites who will run the press releases for ‘Collections’ and help it get healthy sales figures and more importantly a better known brand name for Unico Comics. The SP community is a tight bunch of people who have a great respect for their competitors in the same market. From what I’ve seen I’m really liking the SP market as everyone gets on there is no really horrible rivalry that I can see. I just hope we fit in nicely with them and everyone likes our work. I’m sure they will as we have a great bunch of peeps involved in Unico and our comics should stand out as being high quality. At the end of the day I just want everyone to enjoy themselves.
